Earning My Shower....And Haunted Restaurant Times

I have a confession to make: I don't necessarily see the point of showering every day if I didn't really do anything to warrant taking a shower.  I like to really earn my shower.  My favorite showers are after yard work or mudding or anything involving paint.

Today, I earned my shower.  I went in to my work (restaurant) to clean out the wine storage room and left 6 hours later covered in dust and grime and old food.  What terrible thing did I do to warrant such a punishment, you might ask?

Nothing.

I volunteered for it.

I also volunteered 2 weeks ago to organize the storage room.  And last week, the liquor room.  The liquor room took waaay longer than I had thought it would, but once I start a job like that its hard to stop and feel okay about it (for me anyway...).

It was a job that needed to be done and so I did it!  However,  there was one thing that really had me debating whether I should have stayed all three days that I worked.

That was the ghost(s?).

My man thinks I'm crazy for even entertaining the thought.  I thought my co-workers were crazy for entertaining the thought!

Until 2 weeks ago that is.

That's when the drips started.

There are three stories in my restaurant, the building of which used to be a bank 100 or so years ago.  The second story has three windows that look down on the first story, and directly under the middle window is the archway that leads from the dining room to the service area.  Ever since I told my friend that I didn't think there were any ghosts, at least once a shift there are 2 big drips that fall right in front of me as I go through this arch.

That's not so strange, right?

Well, once you consider that it only happens after the second floor is closed down for the night, and that when I look to see where the drips come from, there is nothing (when the size and speed of the drips would suggest that there was a big leak in the ceiling, or at least water on the floor...neither which happens any time) it gets to sounding a little weird.

I talked to my manager and said how weird it was.  He said that the middle window was where a lot of people have said they see someone walking past who never comes down the stairs.  He told me that a worker once saw a man outs of the corner of his eye standing near the door when he was up there by himself (you can't be silent getting in or out of that door).  He believed in the ghost and said, without looking, that he was just cleaning and was almost finished.  He looked over and the man was gone.

Then there is the little girl ghost people see all the time on the third floor who stays near the men's restroom.  She was recorded saying "Help me" by a group who was interested in ghost stories and wanted to check the building out.

This floor is the one that all the storage rooms are on.

The floor that people routinely hear someone who turns out not to be there.

Now, I don't necessarily ACTUALLY believe there are ghosts....but when you are alone on the top level of an old creaky building with nothing but your thoughts for company as you work, it gets a little spooky!  Is that someone coming up the stairs...or a creepy specter making their way to me??  Is that a cloud moving across the sun....or will I see an unearthly face when I turn around??

All valid questions when your manager insists on jumping out at you any chance he has, increasing the fear.  I said quite a few "Hail Marys" and "St. Michael the Archangel" prayers while working for sure!

The other night my co-worker who is terrified of the third floor had to go up there with me at the end of the night to drop off some linens.  It was dark and creepy with everyone on the first floor.  I was wary of the bathroom as always but valiantly ignoring the fear when the bathroom door opened!

I screamed and threw my hand over my mouth which caused my co-worker to scream and shout "What?!?" while almost falling backwards down the stairs.

My manager, who was using the facilities, screamed as we screamed and it took us all a moment to realize that there was nothing to be scared of.  We laughed hard for the next few minutes!

It really is fun to be a bit scared sometimes :)
